The Tamaskan Club of America™ Tamaskan Wolfdog Official Standard
BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:
Originating from imported USA sled type dogs and mixed with Siberian Husky, Alaskan
Malamute and German Shepherd, they then were exported to Finland where more recently
other ferral looking sled type dogs have been added to improve the Tamaskan Wolfdog. The purpose
was to create a dog that looks like a ferral in appearance with working ability.
GENERAL APPEARANCE:
Large and athletic. Males should be strong and poweful in appearance but females should be
feminine without weakness or loss of power in appearance and both will have a ferral like
appearance with thick coarse fur, and small ears with a straight, sickle like bushy tail.
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:
The length of the body should be approximately longer from point of shoulder to the rear
point of pelvis than the height of the body measured from the ground to top of the withers.
BEHAVIOUR-TEMPERAMENT:
Friendly and affectionate. He should not appear weak in spirit or or aggressive
towards people or other dogs. He has high intelligence with an eagerness to please
makes him a very versatile companion as well as a working dog.
HEAD:
Forms a triangle between eyes and must be in balance with the entire body.
- Forehead: slightly rounded.
- Stop: Moderate, dish face is a severe fault.
- Nose: All pigmentation should be black on the nose eyes and mouth, a snow nose is acceptable.
- Muzzle: Long, Clean, straight bridge of nose. Should not be pointed.
- Lips: Dry and neat fitting.
- Jaws/Teeth: Jaws are strong and equal. Teeth are well developed and noticeable, Must possess a scissors bite.
- Cheeks: Muscled and prominent.
- Eyes: Yellow, amber & brown. The eye must be almond shaped and medium in size.
Droopy lids and blue eyes are a fault.
- Ears: Medium in size, pricked but not small in proportion to the head. Ears must be
triangular in shape and have slightly rounded tips. Ears are set wide apart on the top of
the head and they are facing forward and erect
- Neck: Long and muscularly arched and pronouced.
BODY:
- Topline: Topline must be level with a slightly sloping croup.
- Withers: Good lay back strong and muscled.
- Back: Straight, no rise or dip.
- Loins: Muscled and broad sloping slightly.
- Croup: May slope slightly and be short.
- Lower line and belly: Well tucked up and dry.
TAIL:
The tail should be caried in a sickle extending from the croup upward and the tail should
reach to the hock joint when the dog is relaxed. The tail is carried downward when at
relaxed or at rest, but when the dog is in motion, it is carried higher. The tail,
should not be carried tightly curled curled over the back. The tail has coarse thick hair
with no feathering.
FRONT OF THE DOG:
- Front Legs: Are straight, parallel and close together with the feet turning slightly outwards.
- Shoulders: The shoulder-blade is well laid back and well muscled.
- Upper arm: Well muscled.
- Elbows: Fit closely to the body not turning in or out.
- Forearm: Should be long.
- Feet: Arched toes harelike in appearance.
HINDQUARTERS:
- Hind Legs: Massive power in the hind legs which should stand parallel. Dew- should are optional and may be removed.
- Upper thigh: Elongated and well defined with muscle. Hips are flexible yet sturdy.
- Knee: Powerful and strong with flexiblity.
- Lower thigh: Long, well defined and well muscled.
- Hocks: Long and low to the ground.
- Pasterns: Flexible, may have a slight slant
- Stifles: Angulated and not turned in or out.
MOVEMENT:
Elastic and powerfully flowing, balanced movement. Massive ground coverage. Rear extension and front reach must be equal.
SKIN:
Dry and tight, there should be no sagging of skin anywhere on this dog.
COAT:
- MAKE UP OF COAT: Straight, harsh and close with an soft thick undercoat
that forms over the body including the inner part of the ears. Neck should have the
appearance of having more coat and ruff that frames the head.
- ALLOWED COLORS: Wolf Grey, Silver grey, even dark Black/Grey to Red/Grey
with black overlay must possess a characteristic wolf mask.
HEIGHT AND WEIGHT:
- Males should be 24-28 inches at the withers
- Females may be slightly smaller
- Puppies under the age of 1 may also be smaller
SERIOUS FAULTS
Anything that is a departure from the above points is considered a fault.
DISQUALIFYING FEATURES
- Blue eyes and any other color that what is listed above.
- Ear carriage that does not meet the above standards.
- Markings that are Siberian or "Malamute-like".
- Tail carriage that does not meet the above standards.
- Male dogs must have two normally descended testicles fully into the scrotum.

IS A GUIDELINE FORMATED TO THE AMERICAN VERSION OF THE TAMASKAN WOLFDOG.
THE TAMASKAN MAY BE STACKED IN A FOUR SQUARE STACK OR IN A MORE TRADITIONAL
POSE SHOWING IT ANGULATION LIKE THE GERMAN SHEPHERD.
